Earliest post-Renaissance maps designate the inlet as Persian Gulf

Earliest cartographic maps dating back to renaissance era call the waterway situated south of Iran plateau Persian Gulf, Professor Muhammad Ganji, told a panel discussion on the recent publication of an encyclopedia on Persian Gulf.

 

The panel discussion was staged Wednesday evening in the 24th edition of Tehran International Book Fair and several top researchers discussed the date of the geographical title of Persian Gulf, namely Dr. Muhammad Hassan Ganji, known as father of Iran geography, Dr. Ahmad Mahdavi, professor with Toronto University, and Dr. Kiyanush Kiyani, a top researcher with Great Islamic Encyclopedia Center.

 

Kiyanush Kiyani said a first volume of a much-awaited eight-volume Persian Gulf Encyclopedia will be released this year, adding that the encyclopedia will, among others, present the scientific and cultural aspects of the lands surrounding the major waterway.

 

Four volumes of the encyclopedia will offer general themes about the geographical area and the rest will have an index book format and will help Iranians at home or abroad to expand the scope of their knowledge about Persian Gulf, according to the top Iranian researcher.

 

Mr. Kiyani noted that copies of the encyclopedia will be handed to major scientific and academic centers worldwide.

 

Next Dr. Mahdavi take the panel and described the Persian Gulf as a natural aquarium with magnificent scenes. He then presented several images of the flora and fauna of Persian Gulf, namely Hera Forests, Hengam Island, Hormuz Island and Valley of Stars, considered as one of seven wonders of Qeshm Island.
