Diligence needed in order to fetch Tehran recognition as ‘world book capital’ - TIBF president

TIBF President Bahman Dorri called on all cultural folks nationwide to make a diligent effort to earn Tehran the international recognition as World Book Capital 2013.

 Mr. Dorri, also serving as deputy in cultural affairs in the IRI Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance issued the call Thursday in the third day of the 25th edition of Tehran International Book Fair, the TIBF press office reported.
 
The deputy minister said all cultural bodies nationwide had joined hands to fetch the Islamic Republic the covetous cultural title.
 
He said the ministerial department must exhaust any available opportunities or capacities and plan smartly so that the Islamic Republic is granted the recognition for 2013 or 2014.
 
The TIBF president said the department would ask several bodies at home or abroad to assist the national drive, including the UNESCO, the National Library, the Foundation of Public Libraries and other credible academic and scholarly libraries nationwide.
 
Mr. Dorri then outlined a series of indicators the department has accomplished, promising a successful bid on the part of the Islamic Republic for the international cultural designation.
 
The promising indicators include a notable rise in the number of titles published nationwide and the number of awards granted to authors in different festivals nationwide.
 
Moreover, budding authors have been paid a special attention and top religious and literary publications have received particular support while eminent literary and cultural personalities have been honored and their works have been published in ad hoc projects.
 
The department has also distributed books free of charge among the people, cultural and art bodies and libraries nationwide, each title in editions of over 8,000 copies. It has also equipped public libraries nationwide with modern technologies and supplied them with most recent publications. Finally, it has got public libraries built in provinces nationwide in large numbers.
 
The Islamic Republic of Iran has ranked tenth worldwide in terms of book publication, the TIBF president said, adding the cultural department has already staged 29 editions of IRI Annual Book Award and 10 editions of National Week of Book.
 
The cultural department has been striving to promote book-reading aptitude in villages and remote areas of the country, the TIBF president said.
 
He said the department has already staged 25th successive editions of Tehran International Book Fair (TIBF), adding that the number of visits to the 24th edition of the cultural event witnessed a rise of average 5,000 per day.
