A unique atlas of Persian Gulf, containing scores of historical maps has been on display in the 25th Tehran International Book Fair (TIBF) that sheds more light on the history of the Persian Gulf and helps researchers expose the existing erroneous claims over the Iranian waterway.

Titled ‘Persian Gulf as documents recount,’ the landmark work was unveiled by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on May 10, designated as day of Persian Gulf in the Iranian calendar during a special ceremony on the sidelines of a cabinet session.

The president instructed relevant authorities during the session to put on display the exceptional maps for the public. The maps are now on exhibit in ‘Defense Ministry’ pavilion in the international section of the book fair, TIBF press office reported Wednesday.

The atlas contains a collection of Persian Gulf maps available to the IRI’s National Geographical Organization. These include the oldest available scientific map worldwide attributed to Ptolemy, an ancient Greek mathematician (otherwise known as Batlamius among Persian speaking nations) where the Iranian waterway is called ‘Sinus Persicus.’

Inspectors can browse and review up to 20 historical maps of the Persian Gulf dated until before 1990 that help falsify an unsubstantiated allegation by some Arab states over the Iranian territory.
