Panel urges university libraries to select effective resources

A panel discussion debating the case of "profits and losses of university libraries in book fair-related purchases" listened to viewpoints of Ibrahim Afshar, assistant professor with department of librarianship in Isfahan University who said poor selection was a major source of detriment to libraries.

 
The panel was staged on May 6 in the House of Authors in the 23rd Tehran International Book Fair.
 
Afshar elaborated on advantages of Tehran Book Fair for university libraries, adding however that the libraries are more incurring losses due to poor selection of resources, regularly conducted by non-professional librarians or individuals, than missing the fair's discounts or exemptions.
 
The expert said another major glitch in source selection procedures for university libraries was poor accessibility of state university publishers, adding that certain research-based publications are out of hand due to limited distribution nevertheless the book fair has provided an appropriate opportunity to mend the deficiency.
 
In another regard, Afshar discussed possible shortcomings of fair-related purchases, saying that owing to limited time of visit and space, there is few opportunities at hand of university librarians to make a well-thought selection, leading to they buying poorly-researched sources with more or less undated content.
 
The expert then touched on a range of discounts offered in the book fair as an additional advantage while naming dear costs of staff dispatches and postal services as disadvantages gripping the cultural event.
 
He elaborated that usually publishers expend more on dispatching pavilion staffs than the discounts offered to them by the book fair authorities. "This means a waste of time," he went on to say.
 
The assistant professor also debated several prerequisites for a university-bound purchase, adding that appropriate conditions should be provided so that librarians could offer their needed sources in the course of year. "They must also be able to buy latest publications (in a given domain) authored at home or overseas," the expert reckoned, adding they must be accompanied by a professional librarian in their mission.
