A Spanish post-graduate student in Persian language says a piece of poem in Farsi prompted him to take up the Persian language discipline before leaving his studies in theoretical physics.

Student at Tehran-based Allama Tabataba’i University, Javier Arnandas was speaking in a panel discussion on Persian language learning at the 28th Tehran International Book Fair (TIBF) that is underway in Tehran.

Arnandas said he used to study theoretical physics at Granada University however he always kept an ardent desire for poetry until it happened to him to listen to a piece of poem in Spanish from the renowned Iranian poet, Molawi that was recited by a friend.

The Spanish researcher said the poetical incident prompted him to opt for Persian literature as field of study.

Arnandas acknowledged that Persian is among the best languages in the world, adding it actually was not he who chose Persian rather it was Persian who allured him.

The post-graduate student expressed hope he could present the culture and language of Farsi to the Spanish community through translation.

Titled ‘Sa’adi Foundation and Persian Graduates,’ the panel discussion was held in the international section of the fairground on Friday and was also joined by Director of Cultural Department in UNESCO National Commission, Abd al-Mehdi Mostakin, deputy of international affairs in the foundation, Mohammad Reza Darbandi, and Italian Orientalist, Rafael Maurio.
