The Islamic Ummah Differs from All Dictatorships and Governments

1403/02/27-13:48

Hamid Molana highlighted that the Islamic Ummah is different from all dictatorships and governments, stating: "In my opinion, the Islamic Ummah is a very complete and unique term. If Islamic societies unite, we can become a great Islamic Ummah."

According to the news headquarters of the 35th Tehran International Book Fair, the unveiling ceremony of the book "Ummah" with a focus on political thought and Islamic sociology was held on May 16, 2024, at "Kushk-e Ketab," attended by Hamid Molana and Vahid Jalili, Deputy Cultural Director of IRIB.

Hamid Molana, emphasizing his attention to the term "Ummah," said: "Over the years, many articles and books have been published about the term Islamic Ummah. About ten years ago, I decided to publish my article titled 'Ummah' as a book focusing on political thought and Islamic sociology. About six years ago, I decided to publish this book, and a few weeks ago, we managed to prepare the groundwork for its publication."

The Concept of Ummah

Regarding the book and the concept of "Ummah," he said: "Ummah is a Quranic and Islamic term, and various interpretations have been made of this term in the Quran. As a student and professor, I gave myself the opportunity to explain this term as thoroughly as possible."

Molana pointed out that "Ummah" is a term that encompasses both society and government, saying: "My studies over the years were sufficient to convince me that the concept of 'Ummah' in the Quran is distinct from all the terms I have read in books on Islamic thought and culture."

He continued by noting that "Ummah" is a completely new and different term: "If we consider the subject of society and government, much has been written about society, and various philosophers have discussed it. However, there is no such extensive discussion about 'Ummah.'"

Molana mentioned that the West World has always sought an ideal society and said: "In the West, society and government are on opposite sides, and civil society connects the two."

The Necessity of Unity

This university professor continued: "When you read the preface of the book 'Ummah,' you will realize how simply and clearly this subject is addressed. In fact, the term 'Ummah' forms Islamic political thought and sociology."

Molana, believing that the Islamic Ummah is different from all dictatorships and governments, said: "In my opinion, the leadership aspect of the Ummah is interesting. The Islamic Ummah is a very complete term, and if Islamic societies unite, we will reach a great Islamic Ummah."

He believes that the fundamental difference between the Islamic Ummah and other governments is that the society is not made up of land, water, and language, but a collection of beliefs and convictions.

This researcher added: "The beauty of the concept of 'Ummah' is that your beliefs and convictions are the most important issue in the society in which you live."

The Western Trend Creates a Divide Between Iranian Identity and Islam

Vahid Jalili, Deputy Director of IRIB, said: "In Iran's confrontation with the West, we had two groups. One group went as far as Turkey, lost everything, and became enamored with the West, while another group lived in the West for decades, and the longer they stayed, the more their love and commitment to their identity, nationality, and country increased. Hamid Molana is a prominent example of the second group."

He added: "We hope that the lived experience reflected in Professor Molana's writing, which has attracted the attention of theorists, will lead to changes in the academic environment."

Jalili continued by stating that the inherent weakness of the Westernization trend in Iran has become more evident in recent years: "Today is a day of transition, and promotional and media work alone cannot advance the cause. In addition to this promotional work, we also need theorizing. The work that Professor Molana has done in this book will help esteemed elites act more precisely in this field."

He emphasized that the Western trend creates a divide between Iranian identity and Islam, saying: "The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution referred to the personality of Martyr Qassem Soleimani and called him the most national figure in society. It is better for a person to be able to be present in different countries but, like Martyr Soleimani, maintain their culture and beliefs and not allow a divide between Iranian identity and Islam."

The 35th Tehran International Book Fair, under the slogan "We Read, We Build," will be held from May 8 to May 18, 2024, at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla in person and on the ketab.ir platform.
