The book Al-Mu’assis (The Founder), published by the Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd al-Shaabi), is placed on the top shelf of the bookcase. I raise my hand to bring it down and take a closer look. The book is so thick and heavy that I struggle to pull it down. I run my hand over the cover. I like its design—perhaps just because of the photo of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.
In Al-Mu’assis, published in 2023 in Arabic-English, Ali Al-Fahdawi highlights the key moments in the establishment of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).
I flip through the pages. Page by page, I see images of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and the PMF forces. With limited time, I settle for reading the book’s dedication. It reads:
"Dedicated to our father and leader who taught us the love of our homeland. To all the sons of Al-Muhandis who irrigated the land of Iraq with their blood and spread hope throughout its plains and mountains, north and south. This illustrated book reflects a small part of the heroism of Commander Al-Muhandis and his soldiers on the frontlines, where they liberated Iraq. The greatest result of their struggle was the founding of the Popular Mobilization Forces."
I close the book and stare at the photo of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis on its cover—he who proudly called himself a soldier of Haj Qasem Soleimani.
The 36th Tehran International Book Fair is being held from May 6 to May 16, 2025, under the slogan “Let’s Read for Iran,” at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla. Alongside the in-person exhibition, the virtual section is also available through the platform book.icfi.ir, allowing book lovers to purchase books online.
