Literary translators need to act encyclopedia - Russian professor

Alexander Palchuk, a Russian university professor appreciated the Moscow-based Iran's cultural center for helping Russian translators in translation and publication of cultural and historical works, adding that the endeavor has helped Russian translators to acquire necessary skills and get acquaintance with Iranian culture.
The Russian figure made the remarks a panel discussion on "Study of shortfalls in translation of humanities" staged in a pavilion of House of Authors set up in the 23rd Tehran International Book Fair Tuesday.
He said a translator as a prerequisite must be familiar with the culture and history of both source and target audiences.
Palchuk said however that poetry translation was a rough ride and somewhat impossible, arguing that as long as a mystic text is concerned, a translator must be familiar with the subject and be able to expound it. "Put it another way, a translator must act as an encyclopedia," he reckoned.
